Catherine Smith

Catherine Smith has a BA (Hons) Degree in Graphic Design from Northumbria University and worked on community arts projects in the north east before moving to Suffolk. She started exhibiting her paintings in 2015 with the encouragement of Echo Arts. Since then she has been selected for exhibitions in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. In 2017 she won the Cambridge News Award for an Outstanding Contemporary Watercolour. Catherine is a member of Suffolk Open Studios and the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists.

Catherine’s recent paintings and drawing reflect her interest in linear journeys in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire; they include both observational studies and more abstract responses. They are “traces of where I have been”.

Current work has become more abstract and paintings are concerned with the similarities and differences between local major building projects and images of distant conflicts. A parallel landscape emerges of displacement and symbolism.
